Filarmonica Gioacchino Rossini was founded in 1850 in Recco (Genoa). From its inception, the group has been driven by a deep passion for music and a strong spirit of camaraderie among its members, which has kept the band alive and thriving to this day.
The band’s activities were interrupted only during the years of World War II, when many of its musicians were called to the front lines. Despite many challenges, the Filarmonica was re-established as early as 1946.
Today it has around 50 members, ranging in age from 12 to 80. Many students from the school go on to pursue further musical education at music high schools and conservatories.
Students not only receive individual instruction on their instruments but also participate in the “Student Band”, directed by teacher Erica Parodi. This group helps young musicians learn the joy of playing together and develop social connections through music.
In recent years, the Filarmonica has also formed a choir called Le insolite armonie (The unusual harmonies) composed of around 20 members and conducted by Maestro Luca Franco Ferrari.
While the musical group is active throughout the year, its busiest season is during the summer. They perform at numerous civic and religious events and concerts not only in Recco but throughout eastern Liguria.
One of the favorite activities is cultural exchange with other musical associations. Twinning events are highly valued by its members as opportunities for personal and cultural growth, as well as for forming genuine friendships. The band has never missed participating in the International Music Festival in Genoa.
The repertoire is updated annually and features a wide variety of music, from classical and contemporary pieces to original band compositions, film scores, and jazz arrangements.
The Gioacchino Rossini Philharmonic will celebrate its 175th anniversary on 22nd November 2025—St. Cecilia’s Day.
